A Guide to Writing Workshop: Chapters 4 and 5

I have combined the reading for last week and this week into this post. After reading chapters 4 and 5, what ideas have changed your thinking about the teaching of writing? What ideas would you like to be sure and implement in your classroom?

Hi Everyone!

The CS-side of me just LOVED this chapter! As I read through the pages, I can just imagine making a "to-do list" for planning all of the important structures within the classroom to support kids leading a writerly life. It made me think back to my first year of teaching (SO hard) and how much easier life would have been had I thought through certain routines and structures ahead of time, rather than realizing after- the fact how crucial each aspect of the classroom environment was for successful learning!

I remember the staff developers at Teachers College making a BIG deal about writing partners (carefully assing, have "parter 1" and "partner 2", etc.) and impressing upon kids how important it was for them to take care of their notebook when it goes home each night and to always remember to bring it back to school. The importance of those areas seems to come out in this chapter (among other things.)

I can't wait to hear about your thoughts!
